COLUMBUS HAS A NAME: DIRECTION

SEPTEMBER 23, 2018

Our vision is to help Columbus find hope, follow Jesus, and give it away.

Our vision is for people.

“Columbus Has A Name” means to be known and loved with direction and purpose.

We all want to be known, loved, have purpose – and we are all looking for direction.

Direction has been defined in a few ways:

guidance or supervision of action or conduct”

“a course along which someone or something moves

“a general way in which someone or something is developing

But our directions are only as good as we follow them.

So when it comes to “following Jesus” – we are left with a few questions.

Why should I follow Jesus?

How do I follow Jesus?

Where does following Jesus lead me?

In the New Testament, John’s account has a theme of “believing” in Jesus and his focus is on why Jesus is important. In a moment that Jesus was with his closest followers not long before his crucifixion, he began to help them understand the importance of following him…..

You know the way to the place where I am going. Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. – John 14:4-6 NIV

If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. – John 14:7-8,11 NIV

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. – John 14:16-17 NIV

All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. – John 14:25-27 NIV

Why should I follow Jesus?

Because he shows me the way and truth about life.

How do I follow Jesus?

By his teachings for me, his followers around me, and his spirit in me.

Where does following Jesus lead me?

Home. Back into a relationship with my Heavenly Father. Now and forever.

We are all looking for direction.

Take a step in the direction to follow Jesus.
