Starting Point: the mess...

We all have something inside of us that wonders something along the lines…

Where do I stand with God?              How do I get right with God?             How can I know this?

Faith has a starting point…. And the story of faith has a starting point.

The three largest faith traditions (Jewish, Islam, Christianity) claim the same starting point.

All three of these faith traditions claim ABRAHAM as founder, father – who was used by God to correct the problem humanity had created.

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. – Genesis 12:1 NIV

Promise 1 :: I will make you into a great nation… - Genesis 12:2 NIV

Promise 2 :: I will make your name great… - Genesis 12:2 NIV

Promise 3 :: …and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” - Genesis 12:3 NIV

Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” – Genesis 15:4 NIV

He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars – if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” – Genesis 15:5 NIV

What follows is a statement made by God in a conversation with Abraham that gives us an answer to the introductory question that is deep within all of us. Is it too good to be true?

Abraham believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness. – Genesis 15:6 NIV

Trusting God resulted in a right standing with God.

What if the starting point for a relationship with God is trust?

Which of the following best reflects your view? Why?

God accepts me based upon ::

·      my birth.

·      my behavior.

·      my belief.

·      some combination of the above.
