What is light? – “The natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible

What is the purpose of light? To provide something for you.

Light is a guide. There are different forms and purposes of a guide.

Force in a certain path.

Accompany to points of interest.

Help to reach a destination in an unfamiliar area. (He guided us through the forest.)

Today, we are going to look at a few places in the New Testament where Jesus’ followers documented his words claiming to be the light.

“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’” – John 8:12 NLT

“Jesus replied, ‘My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going. Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light.’ After saying these things, Jesus went away and was hidden from them.” – John 12:35-36 NLT

“But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.” – John 14:26 NLT

Our lives at times can feel “dark” from sadness, loss, unmet expectations, shame, guilt, hurt, disappointment, and just not knowing why we are here. The Christmas season is no exception and often these are magnified. Life gets hard, and the longer we live, the temptation to look at everything through the lens of cynicism and negativity. Jesus puts it this way, recorded by Matthew…

“Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!” – Matthew 6:22-23 NLT

But again, we do not have to live in this darkness. Jesus came to earth that first Christmas as a light, sent by God, was God himself – to guide us back into relationship with our Heavenly Father. Once again, John records…

“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’” – John 8:12 NLT

So what can we do with our hurt, pain, disappointment, guilt?

Thankfully another portion of the New Testament called Hebrews was written to give us hope…

“Now that we know what we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not let it slip through our fingers. We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help.” – Hebrews 4:14-16 MSG

So let’s do that, lets…

Walk up to Jesus

Take the mercy

Accept the help.
